Running Shoes for Everyday Comfort: Circana Report on Trends & Brands (2026)

The world of running shoes has evolved beyond just athletic performance, and it's time to explore why these sneakers are now a staple for everyday comfort too.

The Comfort Revolution: Running Shoes for All

While running as a sport has gained popularity, an intriguing shift has occurred. Consumers are prioritizing comfort, even for casual walking, and running shoes have become the go-to choice. Beth Goldstein, Circana's footwear and accessories expert, highlights this trend, noting the impact of fashion as well.

Circana's survey of 1,000 consumers revealed an interesting breakdown. Almost half identified as runners, with the remaining 51% as non-runners. Among the runners, casual runners who run occasionally made up the majority, followed by regular runners and a smaller group of serious runners who participate in races.

But here's where it gets controversial... The growth in running shoe sales isn't uniform across all age groups. Teenagers aged 13-17, often high-school athletes, represent a small but significant portion of the market, contributing about a quarter of the growth. However, this growth tapers off as they enter their late teens and early twenties, possibly due to reduced spending power.

The biggest growth is seen in the 25-34 age group, who make up about 20% of the business but contribute a whopping 40% of the growth. Interestingly, the 55+ age group also plays a significant role, accounting for around 20% of the business and contributing about a third of the growth.

So, which brands are leading the charge? Brooks and Hoka are currently battling it out for the top spot in the industry. While they trade places occasionally, Brooks is currently holding onto the number one position by a slim margin.

And this is the part most people miss... Circana's data also aligns with industry chatter about the resurgence of Nike and Adidas. Goldstein notes that these brands are improving, focusing on premium products and retailing through more exclusive channels. Adidas, in particular, has a smaller presence in the running space but is experiencing strong growth, with innovative moves to re-enter the market.

Other brands are making their mark too. Skechers, for example, continues to grow in the performance space, and they're aiming to elevate their running shoe offerings to a more premium level. Altra, once a specialty brand, is now expanding its distribution and focusing on a wider assortment mix, including 'heel-to-toe drop' designs, catering to the average runner. In the run specialty space, brands like Mizuno and Topo are also gaining attention.

The industry, Goldstein points out, has traditionally been geared towards serious runners, with a lot of the technology and price points reflecting this. However, the real opportunity lies with the casual runner, where quality, durability, fit, and comfort are paramount, followed by performance and innovation. This presents an exciting opportunity for retailers and brands to segment their products and cater to the diverse needs of different runner types.

When it comes to purchasing running shoes, 42% of respondents cited actual athletic use as their primary reason. Interestingly, 32% bought them for casual, everyday wear, 10% for recreational or social occasions, and 9% for work. The remaining respondents said they purchased the shoes for equal use across all purposes.

So, the next time you're in the market for a comfortable pair of shoes, consider the running shoe revolution. These sneakers offer a perfect blend of style, comfort, and performance, making them an excellent choice for your everyday adventures.
