A Win for Residents: Solent Meads Golf Course Saved from Closure
The residents of Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole (BCP) can breathe a sigh of relief as the Solent Meads Golf Course has been given a reprieve. Concerns had been raised about the potential closure of the golf course, with a petition gathering an impressive 8,000 signatures. However, a councillor, Bernadette Nanovo, has assured the community that the golf course is safe for now.
The council's announcement of three sites, including Erlin Farm, Millhams Mead, and Solent Meads, aimed to enhance access to nature. The Solent Meads Golf Course, in particular, had sparked fears of its potential closure. Ms. Nanovo, representing the East Southbourne and Tuckton area, emphasized the golf course's integral role in the community, stating, 'This is wonderful news. I've met with leaseholders and staff, and we've addressed their concerns.'
The council's proposal aligns with a government scheme that mandates developers to achieve biodiversity net gain (BNG) by restoring natural habitats. This scheme allows developers to purchase land and revert it to its natural state, compensating for any land they develop. Ms. Nanovo revealed that the lease for the current golf course operator is set to expire next year, and the council will tender the lease to a new operator.
The BCP Council's cabinet will review the plans on December 17th, with approval recommended. This development marks a significant victory for residents who valued the golf course's presence in their community. The story highlights the power of community engagement and the importance of addressing residents' concerns in local planning decisions.
