A powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck off Japan, triggering a tsunami alert and prompting safety checks across the region. The Japan Meteorological Agency warned that tsunami waves could reach up to ten feet (roughly three meters) in some areas.
The quake occurred at 7:45:09 PM local time on December 8, 2025, with preliminary data placing the epicenter about 80 kilometers offshore near Aomori Prefecture, at a depth of around 32 miles. In the hours that followed, nuclear facilities in the region began safety inspections, according to NHK.
Tsunami warnings were issued for Hokkaido, Aomori, and Iwate prefectures as the tremor rocked much of northern and eastern Japan around 11:15 PM local time (14:15 GMT).

Many online accounts described tremors lasting well over a minute, and videos showed public warning speakers blaring tsunami alerts urging residents to seek higher ground.
Reuters noted that East Japan Railway suspended several train services in the affected area.
