I know, I know..This post has to be posted before ganesh chaturthi but sorry, i made this on ganesh chaturthi, so i didn't get time to share it before that. This post has been sitting in my draft for so long, so i decided to share it before i forget the measurements. And it doesn't mean that kozhukattai's has to be made and consumed only on ganesh chaturthi.
About Kara Kozhukattai Using Rice Flour
In Tamil, the word Pidi means to hold someone, and it is also used to measure something, such as Oru Pidi Arisi, which means one fistful of rice.
Kozhukkattai, also known as kozhukatta, is a popular South Indian dumpling made from rice flour and filled with grated coconut, jaggery, or chakkavaratti. Kozhukattai, while typically sweet, can occasionally be stuffed with a savoury filling. Kerala Christians prepare it on the Saturday before Palm Sunday, hence the name Kozhukatta Saturday. Modak is a similar dish that is prepared in other parts of India. This is a popular dish for the Ganesh Chaturthi festival.

Ingredients for Kara Kozhukattai Recipe Using Rice Flour
- Homemade Rice Flour - 1 cup (You can use store bought too)
- Water - 2 cup
- Fresh Coconut - ½ cup grated
- Salt to taste
For Seasoning:
- Oil - 2 tsp
- Mustard Seeds / Kaduku - 1 tsp
- Split Urad dal / Ulundu Paruppu - 1 tbsp
- Dry Red Chilli - 3 cut into small pieces
- Asafoetida / Hing / Kaya Podi - ¼ tsp
- Curry Leaves - a sprig
Homemade Rice Flour :
Rice flour is a type of flour that is made from finely ground rice. It differs from rice starch, which is typically made by steeping rice in lye. Rice flour is a popular wheat flour substitute.
Fresh Coconut :
Fresh coconut meat tastes tropical, nutty, and slightly sweet. It has a strong flavour, particularly when dried. When coconut is roasted, it takes on a woodier flavour with hints of vanilla. Fruit, water, and milk are all popular and highly valued for their fresh, sweet, and refreshing qualities.
Mustard Seeds :
They are used as a seasoning rather than a base flavour in many Indian dishes, and they really perk up a lentil or rice dish when fried in a little oil with curry leaves . As a result, mustard seeds are excellent for adding flavour without adding fat to your diet.

How to Make Easy Kara Kozhukattai Recipe Using Rice Flour
- Heat oil in a pan, add in all the seasoning ingredients and saute for a min.
- Add in water, salt and coconut. Bring it to a boil.
- Once it boils, simmer and add in rice flour slowly and mix well so no lumps are formed.
- Now keep this cooking till it leaves the sides and comes together.
- Remove this mix to a bowl and let it cool so you can handle.
- Once it is cool knead once so it is smooth.
- Grease your hands slightly with some oil and take small portion from it and press slightly.
- Now repeat the same with the remaining dough.
- Place it in a steamer and steam it for 8 to 10 mins.
- Remove it and allow it to cool slightly before serving.

Ingredients

- 1 cup Homemade Rice Flour You can use store bought too
