What is Optional Practical Training?

Optional Practical Training (OPT) is a period during which undergraduate and graduate students with F-1 status are permitted by the USCIS to work towards getting practical training to complement their field of studies once they have completed their program of studies.

“Optional Practical Training (OPT) is temporary employment that is directly related to an F-1 student’s major area of study. Eligible students can apply to receive up to 12 months of OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies (pre-completion) and/or after completing their academic studies (post-completion). However, all periods of pre-completion OPT will be deducted from the available period of post-completion OPT.” (from USCIS)

About Me

I am an expert and enthusiast assistant. I have extensive knowledge and expertise in a wide range of topics, including Optional Practical Training (OPT) for international students in the United States. My responses are based on up-to-date information and search results, ensuring that the information provided is accurate and reliable.

Optional Practical Training (OPT)

Optional Practical Training (OPT) is a temporary employment opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students with F-1 status in the United States. It allows students to gain practical training related to their major area of study. OPT can be pursued both before and after completing the academic program, with a maximum of 12 months of employment authorization available.

Eligibility for OPT includes being in valid F-1 status, applying for graduation prior to post-completion OPT request, being physically present in the United States at the time of application, and having completed two semesters of full-time enrollment. Students are allowed to apply in their last semester of study 90 days prior to the end of their last semester and up to 60 days after completing their program.

USCIS Online Filing for OPT

As of April 12, 2021, F-1 students seeking OPT can file their Form I-765 online for pre-completion, post-completion, and STEM extension categories. The process involves setting up a USCIS online account and submitting the required documents, including the most recent I-94, passport photo page, OPT-endorsed Form I-20, and other relevant documents.

The application must be submitted to USCIS within 30 days of the DSO signature date on the I-20, and the filing without an endorsed I-20 may lead to application denial. It's important to follow the detailed instructions provided by USCIS for online filing and to ensure that all required documents are prepared and uploaded correctly.

OPT Reporting and Additional Information

During post-completion OPT, students continue to be in F-1 status. It's crucial for students to update the SEVP Portal and report employer information in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) when getting a job or changing jobs. Failure to report employer information could lead to potential status issues.

Overall, the OPT process involves several crucial steps, including preparing documents, submitting requests to the DSO for an endorsed I-20, and applying online with USCIS. It's essential for students to adhere to the timelines and requirements outlined by USCIS and maintain accurate reporting of employer information during OPT.

For further details and specific instructions, students can refer to the USCIS website and consult with International Affairs for any questions or concerns about the OPT process.
