Hospitals are taking drastic measures to combat a surge in respiratory illnesses!
In a recent announcement, Sarah Hackenbracht, president and CEO of GDAHA, revealed that hospitals are implementing visitor restrictions to safeguard patients and healthcare workers. This decision comes as a response to the rising cases of various respiratory diseases, including the flu, COVID-19, and other seasonal viruses.
But here's the catch: these restrictions may leave some patients without their loved ones by their side. The guidelines prohibit visits from anyone with respiratory symptoms, such as coughing, fever, or chills, and also ban visitors under 14 years old, even if vaccinated.
"We understand the significance of family support during hospitalization," Hackenbracht emphasized, "but these measures are necessary to ensure patient safety and the well-being of our healthcare teams."
The situation is critical, with hospitals in the region reporting higher-than-usual patient volumes for respiratory illnesses. In Ohio, hospitalizations for these diseases have been on the rise since November, reaching 752 cases in the week ending December 13th. Among these, COVID-19, the flu, and RSV accounted for the majority of cases.
And this is where it gets tricky: hospitals must balance patient care and infection control. While limiting visitors is a standard practice to prevent the spread of contagious illnesses, it can be challenging for patients who rely on family support.
GDAHA is urging community members to cooperate by postponing visits if they feel unwell, especially with symptoms like fever or cough. For those allowed to visit, adhering to hospital guidelines, including hand hygiene and masking, is essential.
These visitor restrictions are temporary and will be reviewed regularly, with potential exceptions for specific patient cases. GDAHA, representing 29 hospitals in the Dayton region, aims to navigate this health crisis while ensuring the best possible care for all.
