The annual Daniel Pearl Memorial lecture, scheduled for February 27th, was set to discuss "The Future of Journalism." However, concerns for Weiss' safety, stemming from her staunch advocacy for Israel, led to her decision to withdraw.
UCLA has been under intense scrutiny, including federal investigations, since the Hamas attack on Israel and the subsequent war in Gaza. This event sparked campus protests and brought attention to claims of systemic antisemitism at the university.
The university's associate vice chancellor, Steve Lurie, assured that a comprehensive security plan was in place for the event, developed in coordination with campus safety and law enforcement. Despite these measures, employees at the Burkle Center and the International Institute voiced their opposition to hosting Weiss.
